Palpable fear grip residents of Calabar as they now abandoned their homes to take refuge in churches and bushes for fear of being attacked by suspected cultists in the state.

Sources said residents are no longer living with their eyes closed as cultists who have invaded the city are always engaging each other in a clash of superiority.

Sources said on Monday about ten cultists lost their lives when two gang groups engaged themselves in fierced battle at Anatigha in Calabar South Local Government area.

The incident according to residents occurred at the early hours of Monday when various cultist groups went out for operations in a show of supremacy.

It was gathered that this forced residents to flee for their dear lives as weapons including guns, irons, machetes and other dangerous weapons were used freely.

Sources said there was an open display of charms believed to prevent bullet penetration.

Yesterday at the Edibe Edibe area of the state a young man was hacked to dead by rival cultist group.

At the Anatigha and Slaughter markets there was a heavy exchange of gunshot by the hoodlums as residents abandoned their houses to take refuge in churches and nearby bushes.

In the Calabar Municipal Council Area, two rivalry cults group also clashed leaving behind one dead while several others sustained injuries.

The incident occurred when an elderly woman was laid to rest and the children of the woman who are members of different cults group clashed following a disagreement which of the group should be in charge.

An eyewitness told our correspondent, “When the woman was buried, one of the son’s cult groups displayed and the brother told him to also allow his own group to display but to no avail.

“In the process the groups attacked each other with dangerous weapons and at the end an innocent boy was hit by a stray bullet left the clash left an innocent boy dead as he was hit by stray bullet. The residents have fled the area. The cults operation is too much in the area, we are leaving in fear these days. Please Police should come to our rescue” he said When The Union contacted the Police Public Relations Officer Mr. Hogan Bassey on phone, he confirmed the clash saying that the incident left four persons dead. He accused parents for not taken adequate care of their children lamenting that parents allow their kids to join our kinds of groups, “The parents allow their kids to join all kinds of group, Police is on top of the situation now, every place is under the Police control” he said.
