WBO Strips Mayweather Of Welterweight Title

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been stripped of his welterweight title after the world’s highest- paid athlete allegedly failed to comply with World Boxing Organization (WBO) regulations. Mayweather, 38, secured the WBO welterweight title in May after scoring a unanimous victory over Manny Pacquiao in what was the richest fight in boxing history.

But the boxer had until last Friday to pay a $200,000 participation fee related to the bout, and release two junior middleweight titles he also holds, ESPN.com reported.

After Mayweather allegedly didn’t comply   the WBO said in a statement that it had “no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as the WBO Welterweight Champion of the World and vacate his title.”

Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, told ESPN.com that the WBO’s decision was “a complete disgrace.” “Floyd will decide what, or if any, actions he will take. But in the meantime he’s enjoying a couple of hundred million he made from his last outing and this has zero impact on anything he does,” Ellerbe said.
