Siasia Unhappy With Dream Team’s Finishing

Despite getting the needed result to qualify for group phase of qualifying campaign for the 2016 Olympic Games football event, Nigeria’s Under- 23 squad coach Samson Siasia has lamented the inability of his players to shake off their lethargy in front of goal.

Nigeria’s Dream Team, it will be recalled, wasted a lot of goal scoring opportunities when they beat Congo 2-1 in first leg match played in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Siasia’s expectations that the team would make up for the wastefulness by hitting the bull’s eye in the reverse fixture in Pointe Noire was, however, shattered as the Dream Team battled their Congolese hosts to a goalless draw, a result that qualified Nigeria for the Africa Under-23 Championship holding later this year in Senegal.

“After the game in Port Harcourt, we worked so hard on their shooting ability,” said Siasia. “There were signs that it would be a different story in Pointe Noire; that’s why we are up with the attacking strategy.

We wanted to score and make them (Congo) chase the game.

“Unfortunately, the boys couldn’t find the net again. But it’s work in progress, we’ll tackle that problem.” The ex-international however applauded his team for their gritty performance that moved them a step closer to Olympic qualification.
