Quadri Upsets Africa’s Best At ITTF Tourney

Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri put his group phase loss to Egypt’s Mohammed El-Beiali behind him to cause the biggest upset so far at the International Table Tennis Africa Senior Cup competition by beating defending champion, El-Sayed Lashin of Egypt.

Quadri beat the number one seed 4-2 in the quarter-final match of the men’s singles.

Reportedly, from the start of the encounter, Lashin was full of confidence that Quadri would not prevent him from retaining the title, but things turned around for the Egyptian as he was made to surrender by the 2014 ITTF Star Player. The encounter attracted some fans to the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex in Yaounde, with both players thrilling the fans with their superb performance, which attracted applaud.

To win the match, Quadri had to dig deep to silence Lashin at 11-8, 10-12, 9-11, 11-9, 4-11 and 8-11 to the excitement of the fans. An exhausted Quadri said it was tough for him beating Lashin as both players play same style.

“It was always a tough encounter between the two of us because he has defeated me more times and we both play same style,” said Quadri. “I had it difficult initially. Even the sixth game I was leading 7-2 only for him to level up at 7-7, so it was a tough win.”
