Non-League Sides Beat Sunshine, 3SC, Others

Not unexpectedly, the roundof- 64 of this year’s Federation Cup competition, hitherto known as the Challenge Cup, witnessed a string of shock results, as some nonleague sides booted out elite teams to advance to the round-of-32. In Benin City, Edo State, nonleague side, J.Atete, thrashed Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) leaders Sunshine Stars 3-1.

Another NPFL side, Giwa FC, were beaten 5-4 on penalties by nonleague Kukuruku Dragons of Benin after scores stood at 2-2, while Nationwide League side Plateau United eliminated Shooting Stars 1-0. Plateau United match winner was a free kick by Manga Kuchili.

The Jos-based team were the better side as they dictated the pace of the game by controlling the midfield perfectly. In a Bayelsa State derby at Neros, Bayelsa United thrashed Nembe City 3-0 with the goals from Buhari Jafar,Oghogho Oduokpe and Eric Frimpong. Lobi Stars of Makurdi also recorded their first win away from home in 2015 as they beat Jr Spotlite 4-1 in the round of 64 of the Federation Cup.

Huan Aondongu and Tsafa Terpase netted a brace each in both halves of the game. “We hope that this victory would change the fortunes for the club,” Lobi coach, Justin Tenger, declared after the game.

“You know things have not been good for us in the league. We have played eight matches, drawn six and lost two. “We have been looking for victory because we believe that one victory can turn things around. Now that we have won away from home in Abuja, I hope that things would change for us.”
