Jordon Ibe In Dilemma Over Nigeria Overtures

Jordon Ibe has admitted difficulty in taking a decision as Nigeria and England intensify efforts at getting the Liverpool forward to commit his international future to either of the two countries.

Sunday Oliseh, head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, it will be recalled had early in August met with Ibe and his parents in London with a view to luring the Nigerian-born youngster, who has represented England at youth levels, to play for the Nigeria senior team. However, faced with a looming call-up to the England Under- 21 side this week, Ibe finds it difficult deciding where his international future lies.

Coach of the England U-21 squad, Gareth Southgate, it was learnt, is determined to ensure Ibe does not reject his country of birth (England) and adopt that of his father, David. Ibe said: “I have not spoken to the gaffer about it yet, or my parents. I don’t know if there is a timeline for a decision. “I have been focused on getting myself in the Liverpool team.”

Even if Ibe is selected by Southgate to face the United States and Norway next month, he will not be ineligible to play for Nigeria unless he plays a senior, competitive England international fixture. Ibe has started both of Liverpool’s Premier League games so far this season, but despite contributing to two strong victories, the 19-year-old says there is much more to come.

“There is a lot of stuff I need to work on,” he told thisisanfield.com. “I think I can play much better than I have done in the two games so far, especially with attacking the full-back.

“But with more games, hopefully I will get more confidence and be better in the coming games. There is a lot of stuff I need to work on. I need to be chipping in with goals and assists. “If you prove yourself in training you will get a chance to play whether you are a senior player or an 18 or 19-year-old boy like myself and Joe Gomez.”
