Tiago Ilori is determined to make his mark at Liverpool as the defender vowed to fight for his place in Brendan Rodgers’ first team. Ilori signed for £7million from Sporting Lisbon in September 2013 but is yet to play a senior game, spending most of his time on loan at Granada and Bordeaux. Liverpool are keen to lend out his services again with Sunderland interested in taking the 22-year-old to the Stadium of Light.
Ilori played the first half of Liverpool Under 21s’ 3-3 draw with their Merseyside rivals Everton on Wednesday before departing due to lack of match fitness. The Nigerian-born defender told the Echo: “I want to play for Liverpool. I don’t want to be in Liverpool just to be sitting around. “My objective is the same as every other player, we all want to play so everyone’s going to fight for their place.”
Injury has disrupted Ilori‘s pre-season but he said: “It was frustrating to get injured but at the same time I hadn’t had a holiday for two years and you need some time off, so it came at the right time.”
