Federer, Wawrinka, Halep Advance

Roger Federer’s quest for a second French Open title has started with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 first-round win against Colombian lucky loser Alejandro Falla.

The second-seeded Swiss, who has a record 17 grand slam titles to his name, barely broke sweat in his flashy pink shorts and lilac shirt as he booked a second-round meeting with either Spain’s Marcel Granollers or German qualifier Matthias Bachinger.

Meanwhile, number eight seed Stan Wawrinka had little trouble dispatching Turkey’s Marsel Ilhan 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. Other seeds to progress on the opening morning were 19th seed Roberto Bautista Agut who beat Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 and 22nd seed Philipp Kohlschreiber who thrashed Go Soeda 6-1, 6-0, 6-2.

Second seed Simona Halep moves into second round Last year’s runner-up Simona Halep huffed and puffed past Russian Evgeniya Rodina as the French Open began on Sunday, the Romanian reaching the second round 7-5 6-4.
