Head coach says the driving force behind his team ruthless spanking of the hos is the expectation back home
Head coach of Nigeria’s Under 17 team, the Eaglets, Emmanuel Amuneke believes expectations from Nigerians is pushing his team to greater height. After spanking Chile 5-1 Wednesday morning, Amuneke said the motivation would grow stronger as they progress in the competition.
A brace from Samuel Chukwueze and Victor Osimhen plus a penalty from Kelechi Nwakali ensured the Golden Eaglets spanked the hosts 5-1 at the Estadio Sausalito, Vina Del Mar.
“Nigeria’s don’t like excuses when it comes to getting results in football matches. I think it is our driving force so far and as we progress the desire to make our people happy and proud will push us further.
And the Golden Eaglets gaffer feels his boys deserved to win because of their effectiveness in the attack, while tipping Miguel Ponce’s lad to qualify for the next stage of the competition.
“It is true we were effective up front, but we also knew how to block their passing game, forcing them to play uncomfortably in the midfield,” Amuneke said after the game. “My players understood the transition game, that is when to attack, when to defend.
“We also prepared them mentally, it is not easy to play against the host. Chile has a god team, but today they lost against the best team. I believe they can qualify for the next round.”
On the other hand, Chile handler coach Ponce felt his side were punished for not converting chances they created.
“I told the kids: Nigeria respected us more than the result shows,” Ponce said.
“They took measures to avoid us playing quickly, they knew to wait for us and scored after patient plays, they did not keep us in our goal for the whole game. “
It is true there were physical differences, especially when it came to speed, but it is also true we were not able to finish off the situations we created. Against a good team, they don’t forgive you.”
Nigeria boast of six points and have qualified for the second round of the competition, but will face Croatia who played a 2-2 draw against USA in their third game at the Estadio Sausalito on Friday
