Eagles Star, Onazi, Set To Quit Lazio

Turkish club Besiktas has reportedly opened talks with Italian Serie A side, Lazio, on the transfer of Nigeria international, Ogenyi Onazi. Besiktas, who recently completed the loan signing of striker Mario Gomez from Fiorentina, are said to be in need of a battling midfielder to plug the holes at the heart of their midfield.

Besiktas Foreign Relations Chief, Erdal Torunoğulları, had last weekend met with Lazio’s Sporting Director Igli Tare on the possibility of Onazi joining the Turkish club. However transfer fee could scuttle the arrangement as Besiktas seem not willing to part with the 6 million euros being demanded by Lazio. Besiktas, it was learnt, are ready to pay 2 million euros for Onazi’s services, an offer Lazio representatives say could only facilitate a loam deal.

Torunogullari, it was learnt, has established contact with Onazi’s agent, Kevin Taner, who has arranged a first   meeting between Besiktas’ representatives and the Super Eagles player.

Onazi had appeared not to be important in coach Stefano Pioli’s plan following his failure to hold down a regular starting place, especially since Danilo Cataldi’s explosion onto the Serie A scene. English Premier League side, Liverpool, made moves to get Onazi last December in a swap deal, with Fabio Borini heading the opposite direction.

But no deal materialised as Lazio were determined to keep hold of the player   and push for a top-three finish in the Serie A. Lazio had then scared interested buyers by slamming a £10m price tag on Onazi, but the club is now ready to sell, as coach Stefano Pioli moves to restructure his midfield.
