Chinedu Obasi Fails To Impress Sunderland

Premier League club hints at rejecting Nigeria international

Chinedu Obasi’s hope of remaining in the topflight has suffered a setback with Sunderland announcing they will not be taking up the chance to sign the former Schalke striker.

Obasi, 29, has been on trial with Sam Allardyce’s squad but has been struggling to prove his fitness after breaking a leg earlier in the year.

The free agent, who is a Nigeria international but has a German passport, is now exploring other options.

Despite the weekend’s 3-0 derby victory over Newcastle, Sunderland have been short of goals and new injury, which is why he’s not been fixed up with a club yet, but we’d like to see him for this week and perhaps next week.

“But I need someone who has an impact now, not in three weeks time, so it will be a difficult task I think. But he’s here and if he can show us anything we haven’t got then there maybe something we can do.”

In his three years with Schalke, Obasi scored just four goals in 34 games in all competitions. The club signed him after a brief loan spell in 2012, having netted 25 goals in 91 Bundesliga appearances for Hoffenheim.

The striker previously played for Norwegian second division side Lyn before moving to Hoffenheim in 2007, and has 18 caps for Nigeria.

Sunderland are to begin talks with Duncan Watmore over a new contract, with the 21-year-old’s current deal set to expire at the end of the season.
