Boos, Jeers Trail Mayweather–Pacquiao Bout

Oladipo Okubanjo With Agency Report

Many fans, who thronged the MGM Grand, venue of Saturday’s world welterweight boxing unification bout in Las Vegas, the United States, appeared denied of their money’s worth as they booed and jeered Floyd Mayweather while celebrating his victory against Manny Pacquiao. A Vine recorded at the end of the fight shows thousands of fans jeering Mayweather, who has now won 48 successive fights, as he celebrates by shouting “I told you so” in their direction. Many of those inside the MGM Grand were left disappointed on the night as Mayweather put in a defensive performance against the Filipino fighter.

Pacquiao earlier revealed that he almost pulled out of the fight after sustaining a shoulder injury in training. But the 36-year-old agreed to go through with Saturday’s mega-millions economic blockbuster despite the commission denying permission for the injection in his dressing room.

Mayweather, who went into the bout with a perfect 47-0 record, survived an early assault by Pacquiao and then won the later rounds to finish ahead on all three judges’ scorecards in a welterweight showdown that is expected to be the most lucrative fight of all-time. Mayweather was guaranteed at least 120 million US dollars from the title bout that had been dubbed the “Fight of the Century” and he said in the ring that his next fight will be his last. “My next fight in September will be my last and I will retire 49-0,” said the 38-year-old American.
