Besiktas Confirm Interest In Signing Mikel

Nigeria international hot on Turkish club’s radar

Besiktas are still keen on signing John Mikel Obi from Chelsea after missing out on him in the summer, president of the Turkish club Fikret Orman has said.

His comments come after reports in Turkey claimed Chelsea would sell the midfielder to Besiktas.

The Nigeria international was strongly linked with a move in the summer and Turkish publication Fanatik say they will revive their interest when the transfer window reopens.

The 28-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and has made just one Premier League start so far this term.

Speaking to Fanatik, Orman confirmed the Turkish side kept a close watch on the Nigerian midfielder during the summer and may rekindle their interest in January.

“If [manager] Senol Gunes had given the go ahead we were going to sign [Mikel] and we could enter the race again over the winter break,” he said.

Mikel is struggling for game-time this season, having featured in just three of the Blues’ eight Premier League matches this term. Mikel also endured a stop-start 2014-15 campaign, making just 26 appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side with the imperious Nemanja Matic occupying the holding midfield role for the majority of the season.

He appears to be surplus to requirements under Mourinho, whose midfield has come in for widespread criticism.

Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic have both failed to replicate last season’s impressive form and have not escaped their boss’s wrath.

Mikel, it will be recalled, was linked with moves to the United Arab Emirates club Al Ain and Turkish outfit Fenerbahce during the 2015 summer transfer season, but he insisted he will see out the remaining two years of his contract with Chelsea.
