Fourth-seeded Tomas Berdych cruised into the second round of the French Open with a 6-0, 7-5, 6-3 win over Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka on Monday.
Berdych saved all three break points he faced and hit a total of 32 winners.
The Czech’s best result at Roland Garros came five years ago, when he reached the semi-finals Nishioka had only four winners in the second Grand Slam match of his career.
The teenager retired due to an illness in the opening round of last year’s U.S. Open.
There was an upset among the early results, as Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili beat 11th-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 7-6 (11-9), 6-3.
