Bayern Must Be Patient To Beat Barcelona –Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has said patience will be key if Bayern Munich are to overturn their 3-0 firstleg deficit in the Champions League semifinal against Barcelona today.

Bayern were well beaten on Guardiola’s return to the Camp Nou, but they have shown they are capable of big wins in Europe, having racked up 7-0 and 6-1 victories over Shakhtar Donetsk and Porto in their last two home games in the competition. Guardiola said it would be difficult to replicate those results against Barca but was hoping his usual possession- based approach would be enough to secure an upset.

“You need to score goals,” he told a news conference in Munich. “I want to try it by controlling the game. Maybe we will be able to convert the few chances we’ll get in the first half, but you have to be patient.

“We are satisfied to be in the semifinal, but we are 3-0 down against the best team in Europe in the last 15, 20 years. It’s one game, and we will try.

We need to defend well, and be focused on our style of play.” “We need to take the ball and create chances,” he added. “We were not able to do that in Barcelona.”

However, he repeatedly stressed that Bayern will not be desperately chasing the first goal from kick-of. “I’d love to score three goals in five minutes but if we just play the long ball it will come back at us directly, even though the people in Germany want to see those balls,” he said.
