Federations Cup winners have been told that the state government will back their continental assignment
A member of Akwa Ibom house of Assembly, Otuekong Nse Udofot Essien has said funding will not be a problem for Akwa United football club of Uyo at next season’s CAF confederations Cup competition.
Speaking in an interview with Correspondents ahead of today’s reception of the victorious squad by the State government, the Deputy Whip of the State House of Assembly, Otuekong Nse Udofot Essien, said the government of Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, was committed to sports development in the State.
It could be recalled that the Coach, Zakari Baraje, after helping the team to escape relegation and ensured the team rose above its opponent, Lobi Stars in the Federation Cup final, had threatened to quit the team unless funds were made available for the best legs to be acquired for the Continental assignment.
But the Chief Whip of the Assembly, a major stakeholder in the team, assured that Akwa United would enter the Continental championship with a renewed vigour and determination to win the trophy.
He recalled that the State team, since inception had not made the State proud with any trophy, adding that the current government would do the utmost to make the team excel in the Continental completion with a view to bringing more sporting laurels to the State.
He, therefore, admonished the team Manager Baraje, to work towards taking the team to its new heights of glory in the Continent, assuring that the State government and other stakeholders would fund the team in order to secure the best legs for the Continental duties.
Essien, who congratulated the team for making the State proud in the Federation cup final, recalled that Akwa United has always been fluctuating in its performance since its inception, but was grateful to God that they were able to put smiles on the faces of football followers in the State this time.
