Akinyemi Qualifies For Rio Olympics

Nigeria’s Johny Akinyemi has called for backing from the National Sports Commission after qualifying for the canoe slalom/kayak event at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

England-based Akinyemi qualified for his second straight Olympics after winning the canoe slalom African Championship in Sagan, Kenya over the weekend.

The 26-year-old (27 on 22 November) is still in celebratory mood after returning to his Warrington base, but he is concerned about the amount of support he will get from Nigeria.

Akinyemi has mostly funded his own expensive training with help from his father, and the Olympian is once again calling for Nigerian government backing.

When asked by Completesportsnigeria. com if officials from Nigeria had been in touch following his qualification, Akinyemi replied: “That’s the next part to worry about. I hope the sports commission is supportive.”

Akinyemi revealed that he was so focused on winning a Rio 2016 place he even avoided social media in order to concentrate on achieving his aim.

“I’ve been training so hard for… harder than I ever have before,” he Akinyemi Qualifies For Rio Olympics said.

“That’s even why I’ve been off Twitter because I didn’t want any distractions from my goals. I’m so pleased, I put my faith in God that His will would prevail and the Lord was gracious.

“Now the real hard work starts.”
