AFCON Qualifier: New Faces, As Oliseh Names Squad

Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh has said that he will jet into the country next week to begin preparation for AFCON qualifying match against Tanzania, but what is clear is that new faces are expected to be named in the squad.

According to investigations by The Union Sport, the Eagles head coach is going for younger players who would compliment the older and more experienced ones that would also be part of the team. Already his assistant, Salisu Yusuf have already identified and recommended new faces in the domestic league.

So it will not be faces that are familiar with the fans all over Nigeria that would be invited this time around. Eagles assistant coach, Salisu Yusuf, who is in charge of scouting the home based players for the team has already submitted a list of possible invitees to head coach Sunday Oliseh, which includes several new faces.

It remains unclear the number of home based players that will be called to camp, but there will be major changes to the group that was usually called by former coach, Stephen Keshi, with some of his favoured players dropped. The former Super Eagles’ captain is presently in the United Kingdom with his assistant, Jean Francois Loscuito, and a number of meetings with senior Nigerian internationals in that country are on -going.

“The match in Dar es Salaam is very, very crucial, not only because it will be my first match as Head Coach, but also because we have no choice other than to win.

The three points are important for us to keep up the tempo in our group. “We are on the same three points with Egypt, though they have scored a goal more.

That is why we cannot afford any slip along the way. We will deal first with the match in Tanzania, and then we will start thinking about the CHAN qualifiers with Burkina Faso in October, and then the FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture in November. There is a lot of work. After these matches, we will now start working towards the two AFCON qualifying matches we have with the Pharaohs in March next year.”
