Palpable tension pervaded Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti state capital yesterday as police rounded up the entire Assembly complex following rumour that the 19 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers will storm the House to commence impeachment process against Governor Ayodele Fayose. Heavily armed policemen had cordoned off all the roads leading to the Assembly and prevent those not on official duties at the State Secretariat that was located within the same axis to gain entry.

Aside several Patrol Vans that was stationed at every junction linking to the House, an Armoured Personnel Carrier was placed in front of the Assembly while combat ready anti-riot policemen were on guard to forestall breakdown of law and order.

To prevent being caught napping, the Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) mobilized their members and commercial motorcyclists to secretariat and NTA roads, while barricades were mounted to prevent easy human and vehicular accesses to the Assembly. As at 3pm, the PDP members were still keep vigil on the Assembly, while the policemen were yet to leave the vicinity to prevent breakdown of law and order.

Fayose, who addressed journalists at the Governor’s lodge over the tension elicited by the rumour, insisted that all the entitlements of the APC lawmakers have been paid contrary to Speaker Adewale Omirin’s claim that they were yet to get alerts from the bank.

Fayose flaunted copies of the Skye Bank cheques dated May 26, 2015, issued to the lawmakers to corroborate his claim. One of the cheques, which bore the name Boluwade Bolie Kehinde was received on behalf of the lawmaker and had a sum of N2, 149, 052 .37 on it.

He said it will be tantamount to illegality Omirin to continue with any impeachment proceeding against him in view of the ruling delivered by Justice E.S. Chukwu of the Federal High Court, which ordered that status quo as at April 23 be maintained pending the determination of the motion on notice. The PDP Speaker, Hon. Dele Olugbemi and six other lawmakers had in a suit number FHC/ABJ CS/361/2015 filed at the Federal High Court sought an interlocutory injunction among other reliefs restraining the APC lawmakers from commencing impeachment against Fayose.

“They have been dropping the name of President Muhammadu Buhari as giving them the backing to impeach me. How can an Assembly, whose tenure will wind up on Thursday, be planning this. I wonder why the issue of the past should be allowed to come to play now. “As at the date the court gave the order, I mean April 23,Hon. Adewale Omirin was not the speaker.

It will be wrong for the court order not to be respected. This is illegality and I want to raise this for the public to know. “Omirin has gone to Court to challenge his impeachment and later withdrew such , which means he accepted he had been impeached and a cost of N100, 000 was awarded against him. “So, he is not the Speaker. I am calling on well-meaning Nigerians, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Mahmoud and President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in this matter.

“How can somebody be living in another State and planning to invade his own state, this is something else and I view this as a major crime anyone can commit against his people”,Fayose said. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alerts of plots by outgoing Ekiti APC state lawmakers to cause confusion and trigger mayhem as a means of securing political control of the state, but warned that its members will be fully mobilized to stiffly resist the scheme.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh in a statement on Monday said the party is aware that the outgoing lawmakers are desperate to wreck havoc on the state before the end of their tenure on Thursday as a final attempt in their failed heinous mission to unseat Governor Ayo Fayose.
