Sheriff Set To Retain PDP Chair

Patrick Osadebamwen, Abuja

All clogs that may impede the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Ali Modu-Sheriff from contesting for the office of the chairman of the PDP come May 21, 2015 have been removed by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Party.

The National Executive Committee of the party has approved the zoning recommendation of the Emmanuel Udom led committee which retained the office of the PDP National Chairman to the Northeast in its zoning arrangement.

Senator Sheriff is completing the tenure of the Northeast which became vacant after the after the resignation of the party’s former chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Muazu whom the leadership of the party demanded to resign after his failure to lead the party to victory.

Fielding questions on whether he will contest for the chairmanship of the party from journalist after the 70th National Executive Committee meeting which held at the Wadata Plaza, Sen. Ali Modu-Sheriff said “this is my personal decision. When I make up my mind, I will let you know.”

Sheriff who announced the decision of NEC without details of the zoning said NEC would meet again on the 11th of May to decide on the recommendations on the constitutional review.

“We will meet again on the 11 of March to do the constitutional review.”

He said congresses will start from Saturday and culminate with the National convention on May 21.

Deputy Senate President and leader of the party, Ike Ekweremadu, governor of Gombe state, Ibrahim Dankwambo and Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees called on all members of the to be bound by the decision of the party in spite of their disagreements where it so exist.

According to Ekweremadu the PDP is the only party in Nigeria that can be said to belongs to everyone and belongs to no one and called on members of the party to know that “the time is now for us to make sacrifices, the time is now for us to make compromise so that the party will remain strong, so that Nigeria will be able to trust us again in 2019.

For Dankwambo who spoke on behalf of the governors he said “Let me commit members of the governors forum to the decisions of NEC, as a party and democrat we are bound to have disagreement and agreement on issues but once the party takes position, as party members and democrat, we are bound to follow the decision of the party.”

The Board of Trustees (BoT) chairman, Alhaji Walid Jibrin who was recently discharged from the hospital, he said the PDP will never die in spite of its challenges pointing out that no political party is insulated from having problems.

Instead of jumping board, he called on all members of the party to remain steadfast and solve the problems that confront the party so that it can move forward.

He apologised to members of the Board of Trustees for the inability of the board to hold its meeting before NEC adding that a meeting would be called for the Board to offer its advice as mandated by the party rules.

“The exclusion of the BoT is not deliberate and I appeal to all members of the BoT that they should not take offence that there was no any meeting of the BoT. We will have another meeting after this one.

“We are very aware of various meetings everywhere; I have decided that I will not attend any meeting apart from the properly organized meetings because we have to be very careful in the way we hold meetings these days.

“Many of us who are founding members of the PDP will not leave the PDP and the PDP will never die.

“We will continue to be in PDP whatever mistake is there we might be there to correct it and make our contribution.

“Leaving PDP is not the answer, I will like to appeal to everyone who intends to leave the PDP should stop that, we must unite and all work together in order to build PDP. PDP is within a very good marking and I do not think I See anything wrong with PDP.

“Every party has its own problems and we should use our own problems positively. Am sure soon the whole problem in PDP will be resolved, Walid stated.
