Even Tinubu Couldn’t Stop My Victory

You emerged victorious on the platform of PDP in the assumed stronghold of the All Progressives Congress and in Lagos where Senator Bola Tinubu holds sway. How did you achieve the feat?

Why did you call it the APC stronghold? That’s for them. To me, I don’t take it to be like that. It all depends on the individual; I mean the personality you are talking about. I’m in the PDP (People’s Democratic Party) and the electorate that voted me knows that I’m in the party. Why are you now calling the area an APC stronghold? I won’t take that. There is no area that is the stronghold of anybody. In fact, if Bola Ahmed Tinubu is living in my constituency does that mean I wouldn’t win an election? He should not be the alpha and omega. So, anybody could win anytime and anywhere.

An APC member occupied the constituency, which you are representing. How do you intend to make a difference?

Well, in my constituency now, I think the PDP is dominating. Though council election hasn’t been held, there is just an interim chairman and by the grace of God very soon the PDP will take over the seat because I know we’re going to win the council election. But let me urge politicians to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship. In the last elections, PDP emerged for the House of Representatives and the State House of Assembly. It only remains the local government election. The council chairman is supposed to have even at least called and congratulated the winners, surprisingly, he hasn’t. It’s not about parties, it’s about the constituency, it is about how to move the area forward. It’s nobody’s business or money. It belong to all of us. So, if you think in that constituency it should be this or that you’re wrong. For an example, in the Lagos State House of Assembly, if we want to move forward we must forget about parties now but thinking about the state should be paramount. Other things may follow but it must be the state first and Nigeria at large. I still believe it’s childish play and immaturity of a kind, if not, there is nothing stopping them from coming from the Olympian height and congratulate the winners. Look at my president, Dr.Good luck Jonathan, even before the announcement of the election result, he called then General Muhammadu Buhari to congratulate him, a sitting president for that matter. But, here an ordinary council boss can’t do this. It’s sad!

The governor here is of APC while you belong to the PDP. How are going to work harmoniously with him?

Thank God, I’m in the House of Assembly. This makes my job easy. This is legislative job. I think we can fire at this level. It shouldn’t be about party but now constituency. You have a relationship with your people and fellow Assembly members because we shouldn’t be talking about parties. The governor may be from the APC or the PDP, it doesn’t matter if he misbehaves and members believe that what the governor has done is wrong, then he will be dealt with. So, what we need to do is to call ourselves to have the majority. Once it’s done, there is nothing he can do.

The Lagos State House of Assembly is largely believed to an appendage of the executive. Now that we have members of the PDP, what should Lagosians be expecting?

Exactly. It’s not they believe, it’s the way the Assembly operated. It’s not indepen- Even Tinubu Couldn’t Stop My Victory dent. But now, we are autonomous. Let me use this analogy to explain something. If your younger brother is the one that holds the account of your father and you’re the elder brother. If you want to eat you have to meet the younger brother because he is the one in charge of the key to the safe. So, anytime your younger brother offends you, you may find it difficult to discipline him because you’ll still go back to meet him. That’s the logic between the executive and the legislature. Ordinarily, the legislature is supposed to supersede the executive and after that the judiciary. But most cases, the executive will be on top while legislature goes under. It shouldn’t be. With the autonomy of the House, they should be able to perform.

For the past 16 years, PDP has not had a chance of ruling Lagos State. What efforts are you putting in place to ensure that your party wins in the next election?

Hard work! We’re on it. For the past 16 years, this is the only time we’d achieve what we have now. So, with hard work, we’ll get there.

There is this assumption that internal wrangling within the state PDP cost the party the last governorship election. What do you have to say about this?

You’re about to be correct to some extent. It’s not only in the PDP where there is disunity and wrangling. Go to the APC it’s the same. The APC’s system of government is cosmetic. They know ways of painting things. When something is bad it’d be painted nice. They’re good designers.

Are you saying all is well with Lagos PDP?

All is well with Lagos PDP. All is well with Lagos APC. All is bad in Lagos APC and PDP. There is no smooth operation anywhere, we’re only managing ourselves.

Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon. Yakubu Dogora emerged as the leaders of the National Assembly. What is your take on the process that brought the duo?

How would I react to that? APC consuming APC? But the most important thing is the will of the people. The process is well and clear, very transparent. We can’t have anything better than that. It’s just the best way to handle it.

The Federal Government just bailed out states from financial difficulty. What would say about the step?

It’s just for him to have a rest of mind. President Muhammadu Buhari is still new in power. It’d not augur well to start on a crisis note. I commend the step.
