The highpoint of the mega APGA rally at St. Mary High School Ifitedunu during the week was to inaugurate new executives for the zone. But it turned out to be a rally of party loyalists to call for and endorse Governor Willie Obiano for a second term in office in 2017, just 18 months into his first tenure!
Speaker after speaker let it be known that the state governor has proved his mettle in handling the affairs of Ndi-Anambra . His leadership prowess and administrative acumen have endeared him to the people of the state, at home and in the diaspora. This is why the citizenry have taken a unanimous decision to ensure that he comes back for a second term in office come 2017. This collective resolve of the people of Anambra State was made manifest at St. Mary High School in Ifitedunu Dunukofia Local Government Area where the entire indigenes of Anambra-central senatorial zone whole-heartedly ratified governor Willie Obiano’s second term bid. What was perhaps felt but unspoken was that this was also one of the fall-out of the recent public dispute between the governor and his predecessor, Chief Obi over the N78b reportedly left by the latter in his handover note. Rattled by the distraction and doubt in the public over the veracity of the claims and counter-claims by either party, the party decided to exploit any opportunity to defend the party mandate and government.
St. Mary High School Ifitedunu was the venue of the mega rally of the All Progressives Grand Alliance that featured party members from the 21 local government areas chanting solidarity songs to portray loyalty and support to APGA and to the state government of .
The mega rally was a veritable platform for party faithful to lay hands on governor Willie Obiano in order to dedicate his second term aspiration to God in prayers. National chairman of the party Dr. Victor Oye who led the prayer session , saw APGA sweeping all the votes in Anambra-central senatorial zone .The national chairman was convinced that the response to the rally was an indication that governor Obiano has won all the votes from Anambra-central senatorial district come 2017 governorship election Oye said that the governor has performed all reasonable doubts ; that his 18 months in office was like 8 years in office . He therefore reminded all and sundry that of all the 36 states in the country including the Federal Capital Territory Abuja , Anambra is one of the states that pays salaries as at when due . Apart from that the mega rally was also an opportunity for the national chairman to inform party members that the present executives of the party will not tolerate any act of indiscipline and sabotage from members. He said the party has discovered that some members of the party are not committed to its cause, which he saw as an ironical, adding that without discipline, no political party can make progress or win elections.
He believes that governor Willie Obiano is performing because he is disciplined, which he said reflects in his leadership style . He however reminded them that it is the duty of the party members to build a solid foundation for the sustenance of the All Progressives Grand Alliance in Anambra State and all over Nigeria.
State party chairman Sir Norbert Obi on his part commended the efforts of the people of Anambra-central senatorial zone for organising the mega rally.
Obi said that the All Progressives Grand Alliance is one family and as such speaks with one voice. He also observed that the large turnout of the people of Anambra-central is a collective endorsement and ratification of governor Obiano’s second term ambition in 2017.
Also, the Deputy- Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Harford Ikechukwu Oseke joined others to affirm the position and decision of the people of Anambra-central senatorial zone to return governor Willie Obiano for second term in 2017.
Oseke said that the massive turn out of APGA faithful in the zone portrayed the fact that they hold the party in very high esteem. The Deputy Speaker who also doubles as the lawmaker representing Awka South 2 State Constituency in the state assembly urged the governor to forge ahead with his developmental programmes, adding that those who cast aspersions on the governor are weaklings that never saw anything good in all his efforts.
The chairman of the organising committee of the APGA Mega Rally, Hon. Pete Ibida acknowledged that the rally was a huge success and that the turn out was also very impressive, showing that the governor has endeared himself to the people of the zone. On the issue of sabotage Hon. Ibida stated that the mechanism are already being put in place to forestall any of such incident .
Furthermore, chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance Anambra-central senatorial district Hon. Theophine Nnoli during his remarks disclosed that the zone had without question given governor Obiano certificate of second term.
Hon.Nnoli described the governor as an abundant blessing to the masses as well as God’s instrument for re-awakening of a great dawn in Anambra for the advancement of the state. He said the crowd is convinced that if the governor could transform the state capital as well as record giant strides in socio-economic life of the state in less than 2 years, it implies that no state would be compared to Anambra State in Nigeria by the time the governor must have spent 8 years in office. He therefore revealed that in the last national and state house of assembly elections , Anambra-central was like a theater of war where soldiers and mobile policemen with their tanks together with other sophisticated arms intimidated voters and carted away votes in the area stressing that such horrible episode will never repeat itself again . According to him, the forthcoming 2017 governorship elections would witness the return of governor Willie Obiano for a second term and to that extent the zone has resolved that all the votes from Anambra- central will be given to APGA.
Although he expressed joy that APGA won 10 but two seats in the state house of assembly election in the zone, it was instructive that the party has recovered one of the seats with the hope that the remainder would also be recovered at the Appeal Court.
Nnoli therefore stated without equivocation that APGA is the only hope for the oppressed and the downtrodden in Nigerian urging all and sundry to protect the party from enemy camps and external aggression while seminars will be organised for the 109 wards in the zone to educate them on the ideals and objectives of the party .
Governor Willie Obiano on his part described the mega rally at Ifitedunu as the best APGA function he has attended. Governor Obiano said he was impressed with the turn out of people as well as the organisation of the whole event. Anambra-central senatorial zone consist of seven local government areas namely Anaocha, Awka-North, Awka- South, Idemili-North, Idemili-South, Njikoka and Dunukofia respectively.
