Wike: Why I’m Completing Abandoned Projects

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has given reasons he decided to complet projects abandoned by his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi. Wike gave the explanation at a thanksgiving service to mark the first 100 days of his administration.

The governor stated that he was not comfortable with the practice whereby a new administration embarks on new projects and abandon ones initiated by their predecessors. Wike pointed that the habit was major reason uncompleted projects dot every nook and cranny of the state.

The governor said that during his electioneering campaigns, he promised Rivers people that he will complete all projects initiated by past administrations in the state that will impact positively on majority of Rivers people and residents.

Wike stated that he did not complete any project to take or share glory with past administration rather he felt that neglecting good projects because they were initiated by past governments was a great disservice to the state and his people.

On criticism that he is concentrating on Port Harcourt and road projects, Wike explained that the idea is to give the state capital a facelift and restore it to its former glory as the Garden City.

According to Wike, if the roads in Port Harcourt are bad, this will give a poor image to the entire state as a visitor will judge the state based on the condition of the state capital.

The governor also announced the government’s decision to build an ecumenical centre in the state where all Christians can worship together.

Meanwhile, Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has denounced Governor Wike for completing projects abandoned by his predecessor. The condemnation was contained in a press release signed by the State APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Chris Finebone.

The APC stated that “the decision of Nyesom Wike to make the road infrastructure segment the staging ground of his theatre of the absurd has made a response from the APC imperative.”

Sounding envious, the APC questioned “who should take the glory for this project? Wike or Amaechi?

According to Finebone, the projects abandoned by Amaechi but completed by Wike within his first 100 days in office include Abonnema Road and Obonoma Bridge; Iloabuchi–Eagle Island Link Road and Bridge; AbulomaWoji Road and Bridge; the dualisation of Woji-Elelewo Road with a Bridge and Flyover; dualisation of Garrison/ Trans-Amadi/Woji/ Elelewo/EastWest Road.
