New Secretary To The Government The Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, Hints That His Appointment By President Muhammadu Buhari, Was Simply Reward For Friendship
New Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, yesterday said his appointment to the coveted office, was reward for a friendship that dated back to 2002.
Sworn in, alongside other appointees, the new government scribe said he joined politics in 2002 because of President Muhammadu Buhari. Lawal, who is an engineer, said he joined politics “with the sole aim of making Buhari president of Nigeria”.
Also sworn in were the National Security Adviser, (NSA), Gen. Mohammed Babagana Monguno (Retd) and Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina. The new SGF hails from Hong Local government of Adamawa state. His citation was read by the Permanent Secretary, State House, Mr. Nebolisa Emordi, before he took the oath of office and that of allegiance.
The statement was contained in his biodata which was read before guests and family members at the Council chambers of the State House. Lawal had served as the Adamwa state campaign coordinator of Buhari in the 2003 Presidential election before serving in various capacities in the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, (CPC) and later as National Vice Chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC) for the Northern zone.
Responding on behalf of other appointees, the new SGF thanked God for granting President Buhari “the vision, wisdom, kindness and boldness to consider us worthy for positions of responsibilities”. “We did not have to pass the examination to get appointed into these positions.
It is not because of our tribes, or our faiths, or our political groups that we were considered worthy for these positions”, he said. Lawal also assured that together, they will work as a team to promote good governance and ensure justice and equity in the country. “If it is such, I am sure none of us would have been considered worthy of these appointments. We appreciate the president and we appreciate God that he has blessed us with these privileged appointments.
“It is a privilege to serve Nigerians in these capacities at this point in time. Nigeria is at the threshold of achieving greatness and it our honour and privilege to be senior members of the team that will propel the country to this greatness”, he said, Lawal described President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as leaders that lead by examples, leaders that are focused, whose goal is to build a Nigeria where these is liberty, security, economic prosperity and the rule of law.
“We are grateful that we are part of the team to deliver this goal. Accept our assurances that by the grace of God, we will not fail you, we will not fail our country, and we will not fail ourselves, our families and our friends. “By the grace of God, we will not fail you either.
We will strive at all times to serve our country and to serve you with excellence, hard work and integrity”, he added. Onn hand to witness the swearing in were Vice President Osinbajo, Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie- Oyegun, the new Chief of Staff, (CoS), Alhaji Abba Kyari, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Tunde Olonishakin, as well as other Service Chiefs.
