Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, yesterday wiped tears off the eyes of indigent open heart surgery patients at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) as he doled out N5 million to offset part of their bills.
The governor who was applauded lavishly by members of the UNTH family as well as scores of patients and their relations walked through the wards as he was led by the management of the hospital headed by chief medical director, Dr. C.C. Amah.
He also interacted with the renowned surgeons drawn from parts of America, the UK and Canada. Speaking when he visited the National Cardiothoracic Centre of Excellence of the UNTH, Ituku/ Ozalla, Enugu State noted that his government is very ready to perform its civil responsibility to the people, especially the children who he described as helpless.
Apart from the open heart surgery patients, the governor also acceded to the request of a school boy whose left leg has been amputated and offered to provide him an artificial limb just he attended to a wheel chair-ridden patient who could no longer go home after discharge owing inability to pay his bill.
The patient had created scenes when he broke into tears on sighting the governor and when the governor agreed to settle his outstanding bills, he dramatically fell off the wheel chair, resting on the feet of the governor who helped him back to his chair.
Ugwuanyi said children are helpless creatures who need , promising that his government will continue to partner with all the stakeholders and individual/organization towards uplifting the life of the helpless ones in the state.
He urged the PDI Unit of Government House to ascertain the challenges plundering the completion of the contract as awarded by the previous government Governor Ugwuanyi used the occasion to express his satisfaction and appreciation towards the management of UNTH and all the stakeholders for their humanitarian services while assuring them of his government’s preparedness towards partnering with them to make it a success.
Earlier in his address of welcome to the governor and his entourage, the Chief Medical Director of UNTH Ituku/Ozalla, Enugu, Dr. C.C. Amah intimated that the National Cardiothoracic Centre of Excellence for Cardiovascular Surgery and Medicine was as…. by federal government in recognition of the pioneering role of UNTH in the area of Cardiac Surgery in January 1984.
