Udom Seeks Free-Hand To Appoint Cabinet

Iniobong Ekponta, Uyo

Determined to deliver on his pre-election promises, the newly sworn-in Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Deacon Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, has begged his supporters including politicians and friends of government, to allow him free-hand to pick his cabinet members.

Speaking at the end of the threeday fasting he declared upon his assumption of office last weekend, the Governor solicited the cooperation of the people in the task of consolidating on the achievements of the immediate past government of Chief Godswill Akpabio. According to the Governor, who said he was on a mission to provide service as well as address the yearnings and aspirations of the people, said only quality and time-tested professionals, irrespective of ethnic and socio-political affiliations would work with him to take the State to its preferred destination.

While admonishing the people to jettison every sentiment, the Governor vowed that the dividends of democracy would be spread to everybody during his era, noting that it would be unthinkable for people to nurse what he described as empty fears that it is only when those closer to them were appointed into government, that they could feel the positive impact of his administration.

Since he won the April 11 governorship poll, our Correspondent gathered the Governor has been bugged by widespread horsetrading and political maneuvers orchestrated by politicians angling to satisfy their political interests in the new government. But government sources say the former Zenith Bank’s Executive Director and later Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in Akpabio’s cabinet, appears not amenable to such intrigues, as “Udom is not planning to run ‘chop I chop’ government”. It was gathered the list of those to form the new cabinet would be sent to the 6th session of the State House of Assembly for vetting and approval in the next couple of days.
