Three witnesses who were brought by former Senate President David Mark to testify at the National and State Legislative Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Makurdi, the state capital, yesterday, disappeared at the court premises.
The witnesses, Onazi Emmanuel, Paul Okpe Anyebe, Julius Ali who were called to testify were no where to be found even though they were said to be present at the court premises. Kenneth Ikonne, lead counsel to the immediate past senate president before commencement of defence told the tribunal at the resumed hearing in Makurdi that he would be calling 8 witnesses for the day having expressed concern that he was losing some of them to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
But when it was time for the 6th witness to be ushered in for the day, he was nowhere to be found even though according to Mark’s counsel, they were seen in court following an earlier mobilisation to that effect.
Addressing the Honourable Tribunal on the situation, Ikonne expressed worry that even though he was not familiar with the Benue State political terrain, there was something strange happening. He said, “my witness came to me to say that he has gone to the APC, he spoke with other witnesses and now I cannot see them in court.” The matter was adjourned till 13th August, 2015 for continuation of defence.
