The State Law makers in the National Assembly yesterday petitioned President Muhammad Buhari over the alleged role and politicisation of security agencies by the state’s All Progressive Congress (APC).
In a petition titled “Criminal Conspiracy, Compromise And Politicisation of the Security Agencies By APC Rivers State signed by Senator George Thomas Thompson, Senator Olaka Nwogu and other law makers alleged that the APC in Rivers, the State Security Service (SSS) and the Nigerian Army have planned to criminally perjure and corruptly subvert the course of justice using the power of their offices.
It said, “Kindly recall our earlier petition to you dated 23rd July 2015 against the Director State Security Services (SSS) who arrested and detained several staff of INEC based on a prearranged petition by the Governorship candidate of the APC , who is a petitioner before the Election Petition Tribunal.
It took the intervention of the Senate to make the SSS realise that they were acting ‘ultra vires’ their powers under the National Security Agencies Act Cap. N74.
They admitted and indeed under the enabling statute they have no business interfering into electoral matters, particularly when there is a pending litigation.
“The same issue has resurfaced as one Magnus Abbe an APC Senatorial Candidate and a petitioner in Petition No. EPT/ NASS/S/01/2005 whose main claim at the Tribunal is that there was no election in Rivers South- East Senatorial District on 28th March 2015 and prays the Tribunal to nullify the result that inured there from.
“Whilst, witnesses are already testifying at the Tribunal, the Petitioner caused another petition to the SSS on the same subject matter and the Director SSS has sent his men to Port-Harcourt to investigate whether election took place or not.
