The Nigeria Society Of Engineers (NSE) Umuahia branch has called for the transformation of the construction Industry in the Country to insure that high standards of construction is adhered to by all actors in the industry.
Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the society which held in Umuahia over the weekend, the branch Chairman Engr. Shedrach O. Iweha revealed that both the private and public sectors has been in vanguard of finding the best opportunities to enhance the construction industry in Nigeria and the entire African continent as well.
He noted that the United Arab Emirate (UAE) which expanded on the Concrete Panels Housing System (CPHS) idea of the Australian construction industry since the 1980s, had made much improvement of the invention, consequently is now a centre of attraction in the construction world today.
Iweha disclosed that the most captivating aspect of the UAE ingenuity in construction is not only in the reduction of costs, pointing out that the (CPHS) is also ideally adapted to projects where speed, durability, superior thermal, acoustic and structural capabilities are all demanded. The NSE boss insisted that for any meaningful transformation to occur in Nigerian’s construction industry in view of the enormity of flaws and irregularities currently being witnessed in the industry, conscious efforts must be made to identify all state/ regional laws and policies on modalities for the construction industry.
He further pointed out that efforts must be made to collate all temporary Government policies/ guidelines for the protection of engineering personnel, companies and workout modalities to elicit compliance at state and national levels, adding that a unit within the NSE should be created that will act as a hub for foreign engineering companies seeking for partnership in Engineering in the state or foreign company stakeholders in the industry.
In his key note address, Engr. Chris Okoye noted that Nigeria is witnessing one of its most defining moments in her history even as the federal government is charting a formidable way forward for a giant leap in Nigeria’s socio- economic development. According to him, “ President Buhari and the current Governors’ attention is on the issue of reform of the construction industry as a sustainable instrument for re- engineering our economy”.
