A major with the Nigerian Army [name with-held] and other two soldiers have been reported killed in Abonnema, Akuku-Toru LGA Thursday afternoon by unknown gunmen.
Our correspondent gathered that the soldiers were attacked late Thursday morning ad the duo died as a result of injuries sustained during the attack while two other injured soldiers are currently.
The attack on the soldiers coming barely 48 hours to the March 19, 2016 legislative elections in the state have heightened tension in the state.
The security situation in the state worsen by violent utterances from the APC and PDP has created fear in the hearts of residents of the state.
The Saturday rerun elections in the state may witnessed low turnout of voters as many residents have vowed not to come out to avoid being victims of clashes between the two rival parties in the state.
Many residents of the state have used the two day public holidays declared by the state government to travel outside the state for fear of violence.
Some residents of Port Harcourt, the state capital, living in flash points or violent-prone areas are relocating to safer part of the state or nearby state.
Some parents whose children have completes their second terminal examinations have relocated them to nearby state.
As at Thursday,traffic was light on Port Harcourt roads while the major parks in the state were besieged by inter state commuters.
The heavy presence of security personnel in the state have forced many residents of Port Harcourt to go home before night fall while there has been a lull in night life in the state capital for more than two weeks now following numerous cult and politically motivated killings in most parts of the state.

According to Lazarus, “AT ABOUT 11 AM TODAY THURSDAY 17 MARCH 16, TROOPS ON PATROL ALONG THE WATERWAYS IN THE GENERAL AREA OF ABONEMMA, AKUKUTORU LGA OF RIVERS STATE HAD A FIERCE ENCOUNTER WITH A GROUP OF UNKNOWN GUNMEN SUSPECTED TO BE SEA PIRATES.
” OUR MEN DISPLAYED EXTRAORDINARY VALOUR DURING THE ENCOUNTER. UNFORTUNATELY, AN OFFICER AND A SOLDIER WHO SUSTAINED VARIOUS DEGREE OF INJURY LOST THEIR LIVES.
“WE ARE IN PURSUIT OF THE CRIMINALS AND WE WILL SURELY GET THEM. ALL LAW ABIDING CITIZENS ARE URGED TO REMAIN CALM AND GO ABOUT THEIR LAWFUL ACTIVITIES. THE ARMY WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE NECESSARY SACRIFICES TO ENSURE SUSTAINABLE PEACE AND SECURITY OF LIVES AND PROPERTY OF EVERYONE IN THE STATE.
