Senate has summoned the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, to appear before its Committee on Works, and brief it on his action plans for the reconstruction of all bailey bridges nationwide.
The Upper Legislative Chamber also mandated the Federal Ministry of Works to undertake an inventory of all bailey bridges nationwide, and report the statuses of such bridges to the Senate within four weeks.
The Red Chamber equally charged the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to urgently reconstruct the bailey bridges across Ebenyi River at Ikem in Isi Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State, collapsed on November 6, 2015.
These were resolutions from a motion moved by Senator Gilbert Nnaji, who decried the existence of the bailey bridges for decades of years. Nnaji particularly noted that the bridges were built between the Second World War and post-civil war eras to serve as temporary platforms for human and vehicle crossing.
Nnaji said that such bridges found across the nation were built with pre-fabricated metal truss, adding that they have either “caved in or collapse due to age and pressure thereby causing untold hardship to commuters, motorists and other road users.”
