Reps: N/Central, S/East Caucuses Decry Marginalisation In Selection Of POs

Dyepkazah Shibayan, Abuja

South East and North Central Caucuses of the House of Representatives yesterday decried the All Progressive Congress (APC) stance on the purported zoning of principle officers to the regions of the North East and South West leaving out other geo – political zones. Speaking to journalists in separate press conferences, they lamented that the party had completely excluded them from the offices of principal positions in the House.

They said that the party should take into cognisance the Federal Character principle embedded in the constitution in the allotting of principal offices.

Speaking on behalf of the party’s North Central caucus in the House, Ahman Pategi from Kwara state said that the party’s position was taken without consulting the caucus adding that they were shocked when the party stated in the said publications that they arrived the decision after due consultation.

“We are also amazed by the directive of the party to the Leadership of the House to take necessary action on the purported choice made by the party, which we see as a clear usurpation of the powers of the zonal caucuses and their members as guaranteed by the constitution and the standing rules of the House of Representatives.

“We therefore strongly reject the purported selection by the party which we see as being in conflict with the principle of the Federal Character as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic, “Pategi said. He said that the North Central caucus believes that there should be fairness and equity in the selection of other principal positions of the House of Representatives following the emergence of both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

Addressing journalists un behalf of the South East caucus of the APC in the House, Austin Chukwukere from Imo state said, “we can’t stand here and allow the party sweep us out. “In the spirit of Federal Character the party has not done the right thing”.

Chukwukere stated that if the South East is not carried along in the appointing of principal officers they will lack the moral and courage to serve the party. He further called on the APC to find a solution and carry all other geo political zones along in the appointing of principal officers in the House of Representatives.
