Reps Bicker Over Choice Of Official Car Brand

Dyepkazah Shibayan, Abuja

Members of the House of Representatives, Wednesday, at a closed-door session, became divided over the brand of car to be bought for their official use, a source at the meeting has revealed.

The Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Abdulrazak Namdas earlier said the House had settled for Peugeot 508.

But our source, who was privy to the session, said while some lawmakers were canvassing for Peugeot 508, others canvassed for Toyota Camry 2016 and Prado Jeeps 2016 models.

The source, who pleaded not to be named, however said given the slash of the National Assembly budget to about N115bn, buying Prado Jeeps will not be possible.

It was gathered that the lawmakers also discussed the continuous retention of Chairman of Appropriation Committee, Abdulmumin Jibrin, by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, following his alleged role in the padding of 2016 budget by single-handedly cancelling appropriated sums for projects in the southern part of the country and moving same to unappropriated projects in his home constituency.

His action involved N4bn, which he moved to fund items including hair dressing equipment, tricycles, village hall etc for his constituents.

“We are surprised that the Speaker still retained Chairman of the Appropriation Committee after the embarrassment he and his counterpart in the senate caused the National Assembly and the leadership of the National Assembly”, the source said.

When contacted, Namdas said that there was no talk on Prado Jeeps for members as the House had settled for Peugeot 508.

He also denied that there was a move to remove Jibrin as Chairman of the Appropriation Committee over the alleged padding of the budget.
