…. Solicits Prayers For Buhari, Others
Dyepkazah Shibayan, Abuja
Following the fracas that ensued in the House of Representatives last Thursday, the Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Dogara over the weekend stated that the All Progressive Congress’s (APC) letter to the House leadership containing whom to assign principal offices to, was against the constitution of Nigeria.
The Speaker said at his office in Abuja when he received a delegation of past members who were led by Hon. Dauda Bundot and Hon. Jonathan Asake. “As leaders, we are bound by the constitution and when we got that directive from the party, we said that we must defend the constitution, we must enforce our rules. “It would have harmful effects to the constitution of Nigeria for us to adopt the position of the party, because certainly of its gravity to the constitution, “he explained.
He further expressed his frustration over the heat the selection of principal officers was generating saying; “Assuming we go ahead to announce the party’s position, which recognises members of the north central as principal officers and most of the members from the southwest as principal officer positions and then the north central members have already made a very strong allegation against APC.
“Assuming they win the case and the court now rules that that directive of the party breaches the provision of the constitution relating to the federal character, so do we now begin to see somebody vacating his officer principal position so that we can accommodate the court’s ruling?”, he queried.
According to him, these are matters that are difficult to fathom and sort out just as he was quick to add that these issues had been raised with the leadership of the party earlier. The Speaker said that in order to avoid these problems it will be best that the offices of the presiding officers were given to other zones who had produced anyone.
“There has never a time in the House where a zone got more than two leadership positions and we all know the provision of the constitution which did say that all positions must be guided by the standing orders, “the Speaker explained.
Dogara also said that it is important that a commission be established that will enforce the federal character principle in the allotting of offices. “It is so import and dear to our country that we have to establish a commission to enforce that particular position of the federal character”. Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Yakubu Dogara yesterday called on Nigerians to pray for the success of President Muhammadu Buhari and leaders at all levels of government.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs Turaki Hassan in Abuja, said Dogara made the appeal during a church service at Living Faith Church, Abuja. The Speaker said the challenges confronting the present crop of leaders in the country are not ordinary and that it requires extraordinary prayers to overcome. “I want to plead that because the problems we have now in the country now are not conventional. And so conventional wisdom cannot solve them. We need divine wisdom.”
