PDP Dominates A/Ibom Assembly …As INEC Issues Certificates Of Return

Iniobong Ekponta, Uyo

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will maintain its dominance of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly when the 6th Assembly is constituted in June. This followed the outcome of the just concluded State Constituencies’ polls held on April 11, 2015, across the 26 Constituencies. At the presentation of Certificates of Return (CoR), to the winners at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Uyo, the State capital, the results indicated overwhelming victories for the ruling PDP candidates.

In the 26-member Assembly, no fewer than 25 members were returned on the platform of the PDP, while the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) has only one member representing Urue Ofong Oruko State Constituency.

Handing out the certificates to the winners, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr. Austin Eni Okojie, said “all the other contestants have accepted defeat”. Besides, he explained that the issuance of the certificates was to forestall others from claiming victory in the same contest.

It could be recalled that the issuance of the documents was delayed by INEC over gruesome murder of the APC candidate for Ukanafun State Constituency, Obong Okon Uwah, alleged to have been hacked to death few days to the poll by suspected PDP thugs loyal to the Vice Chairman of Ukanafun, Hon. Effiom Abai, who is currently being detained by the Police in Uyo, over the incident. However, supplementary bye-election was held on April 25, 2015, with the PDP candidate, Otobong Jonathan, emerging as the winner.
