Following the recent increase in tuition and boarding fees in Federal Government Colleges in the North-West Zone, a group of Concerned Parents has expressed dismay over the hike describing it as illegal and plot to sabotage the present efforts of the Federal Government.
The Group, in a press statement made available to the media in Kaduna yesterday, expressed uttermost dismay over the way at which some principals of the FG Colleges in the zone conspired to sabotage the efforts of present administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari through indiscriminate increase of the school fees.
The statement which was signed by Alh. Balarabe Maimagani, Alh. Kabiru Sani, Alh. Saidu Ya’u and Alh. Yusuf Ado, the group stated that the Federal Government Colleges were not established for commercial purposes but a Unity School to provide education to all Nigerians.
It further stated that the FG pays overhead costs, salaries and other monthly on quarterly basis as the case may be to the staff of these institutions, yet some principals decided to increase school fees beyond affordability of most parents and forcing many guardians/parents to begin to think of withdrawing their wards from the school.
The statement gave an example of Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Bakori, Katsina State “where the former rate for boarding students is N36,400 and day students N23,400; but today the new rate are boarding students N63,200 while day students stands at N48,700”.
Similarly, FGC, Anka Zamfara State where old rate for returning students stood at N18,200, while the new rate is N36,600. “Parents’ Teachers Association (PTA) dues/levy used to be N3,500 but now N10,000”. “The parents/guardians wonder why they are being forced to insure their wards for life in the bills and most of them are even made to pay new fees for their wards who are old students of the schools especially payment for new books and uniform which they already have”.
This, they described as a way of exploiting innocent parents. The parents said “what baffles them most is the payment of bed subsidy for beds being used for years and wondered why some principals from other FG Colleges did not increase their fees; and yet others went ahead to increase their at will”.
