Osun PDP Lashes Out At June 12 Profiteers

Yetunde Oladejo, Osogbo

Osun state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sunday, said those politicians using the goodwill of the acclaimed winner of June 12, Presidential Election, Bashorun MKO Abiola, to win favours are the real enemies of the late business mogul.

Besides, the PDP condemned the state governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola for declaring Monday, June 13 public holiday in honour of the memory of late MKO Abiola describing his action as hypocrisy.

The party said Aregbesola was part of those that frustrated effort to name University of Lagos after the late businessman and politician.

The party in a statement issued in Osogbo by its spokesperson, Prince Diran Odeyemi recalled that the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, had in recognition of the sacrifice of the late Presidential candidate of Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the nation’s democracy, named University of Lagos (UNILAG) after him.

The statement said, “But what did Jonathan get in return, protests were instigated and insults hurled at President Jonathan by those that have over the years benefitted immensely from the goodwill of late Abiola.

“Chief MKO Abiola stands for all that is noble and good. Unfortunately, effort that would have perfectly immortalized him, was rejected by the biggest beneficiaries of late Abiola’s goodwil and philanthropy.

“Nigerians know those that worked against UNILAG being named after MKO and history will always remember President Goodluck Jonathan as the courageous leader that made sincere efforts to immortalize him. Those that thwarted move to permanently etch MKO on our minds are the ones laying wreaths at his graveside now, so sad!”

PDP who observed that Ogun state which is the home state of late MKO, Abiola did not declare public holiday noted that ” wasting a whole 24 hours in the life of a state that has been milked to near death is condemnable.”

The party then called on President Muhammadu Buhari to name a national monument in the memory of late MKO Abiola in recognition of the role he played in facilitating the democracy in Nigeria.
