Osun State of Osun House of Assembly, Wednesday, advocated the institutionalisation of awards and honours for diligent teachers and special packages that will inspired them to excellence.
The Assembly, while congratulating the teachers on the celebration of 2016 Teachers Day, also called for commitment to professionalism and character building on the part of the teachers.
In a statement signed by the Chairman, House Committee on Information and Strategy, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, the Assembly noted that quality of education and efficiency of teachers will define the future of the country in a digital age.
The Assembly under the leadership of Hon. Najeem Salaam also commended the teachers in the state for their sacrifice in the face of economic challenge saying that teachers are pivotal to the actualization of the education policies and programmes of the state government.
Identifying the role of teachers as not only nation builders and role models, the assembly stressed that government at all levels must give more attention to incentives and training of teachers especially in the area of child protection, methodologies and pedagogy of teaching.
It then lauded Governor Rauf Aregbesola for his stride in education especially investment in infrastructure, and also appealed to the people to ensure that those structures are put into good use.
According to the statement, “Teachers are critical stakeholders in the education system and performance of students among other varying factors cannot be disconnected from commitment and effectiveness of teachers.
“In Osun, the government has hugely invested in the education system from the construction of model schools, provision of computer table of knowledge (Opon Imo), provision of school uniform, feeding of elementary school pupils and above all employment and motivation of teachers among others” the assembly stressed.
The Osun state assembly called on the residents and other stakeholders in the education sector to seek for ways to honour, inspire and encourage teachers in a way that would restore their pride in the society.
The parliament however promised not to relent in its efforts at applying legislative tools to better the lots of teachers in the state.
