Vice President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday assumed office as Acting President following a letter to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari announcing that he will be proceeding on a short vacation, effective from February 5th, 2016.
A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina the short vacation is expected to last from February 5 to February 10th, 2016.
The statement noted that “While President Buhari is on vacation, the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo will perform the functions of the President”
The letter to the leadership of the National Assembly is in compliance with Section 145 (1) of the Constitution of Nigeria.
“President Buhari has dispatched a formal notice of his vacation to the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives”
section 145(1) of the 1999 constitution had stipulated that ” Whenever the President transmits to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives a written declaration that he is proceeding on vacation or that he is otherwise unable to discharge the functions of his office, until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary such functions shall be discharged by the Vice-President as Acting President”
