A Chieftain of the All Progressives Party (APC) and the first civilian Governor of the old Abia State, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, has bagged an honorary doctorate at Abia State University (ABSU).
Dr. Onu was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in Public Administration. Conferring the award, the Vice – Chancellor of University, Prof. Chibuzor Ogbuagu, said it was a well deserved honor considering Dr. Onu’s dedication and wealth of experience in Public Service.
Also, an e-library built in Umuahia for the Abia State University by the state Government was thereafter named after Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Expressing gratitude to the university community for finding him worthy of the prestigious honorary degree, Dr. Onu said: “I feel very happy that Abia State University was able to organize a special convocation, the third of its kind in the history of the university.
The first was when they received Gen. Babangida and second was when they received President Obasanjo and now this is the third. I feel very grateful to the university and all the loving people of Abia State for this great honour”.
After the award, a reception, which had in attendance prominent Igbo leaders such as HRM, Eze Emmanuel Njemanze (Ozuruigbo IV), HRM, Eze Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, and other traditional rulers and prominent politicians that cut across the entire South – East geographical zone, was organized in honor of Dr. Onu to mark his honorary doctoral degree. At the reception, speakers paid glowing tributes to Dr. Onu, who was variously described as a rare breed of Nigerians, quite, impactful and a colossus that bestrides his environment .“
When we see somebody who is a beckon of hope and embodiment of hope of all that we hold dear, we need not hesitate to celebrate him and that is why we have gathered here to celebrate Dr. Onu because we know that he is deserving of being honoured”, said one of the organizers.
