Anambra State Government has intensified its sensitization on the installation of the new speed limiter technological device approved by the Federal Road Safety Commission to reduce road traffic crashes. It would be recalled that the speed limiter device was first introduced in the state in 2012 but enforcement was delayed.
Speaking with newsmen in Awka on the effectiveness of the speed limiter device and why it is necessary that all commercial vehicles in Anambra state should have the device installed in their vehicles, Mr.Chidi Okoye Managing Director of Oblong Consult Limited said that the use of the speed limiter is the current global practise.
Mr.Okoye explained that the benefits of having the speed limiter installed in a vehicle are too numerous to mention as it preserves life and saves money for the operators of commercial vehicles. According to him, the device also has a tracking system that helps to locate a vehicle where it is and in the event of theft, the device also helps to demobilise the vehicle and render it motionless.
Mr. Okoye, who observed that 90% of the crashes on the road are caused by over-speeding, stated that such drastic situations can be averted when one is driving at a controllable speed adding that the overall essence of the speed limiter device is to address issues of over-speeding as well as save money for the fleet operators.
Although he pointed out that enforcement on the new speed limiter device would have naturally taken effect from 1st September 2015 but an appeal for extension of time was made in order to further sensitise the general public and motorists in particular on the efficacy of the device and why it is also important that the device should be installed in vehicles as enforcement will commence soon.
