Obasanjo Visits Ile-Ife, Tasks Kingmakers On Transparency, Fairness

Former President , Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday charged the kingmakers in Ile-Ife to ensure transparency and fairness in the selection process of the new Ooni.

Obasanjo who arrived arrived Ile- Ife around 9:30am made his way to the private residence of the late Oba Okunade Sijuwade situated along Osogbo road where he condoled with the late monarch’s wives.

Obasanjo signed the condolence register at the entrance to the late Ooni’s sitting room before he went into the inner chamber where he met with two of the wives of late Sijuade, Olori Morisola and Ladun.He described the demise of the late Ooni as a great loss to the entire nation, urging the wives of the influential monarch to take heart.

Obasanjo who had earlier spoke with the Ife High Chiefs at the Ooni’s Palace, tasked the kingmakers to allow God’s wisdom to prevail on them while choosing the person that would replace the late Ooni.

He described the stool of Ooni as a dignified and a significant stool which must be occupied by a dignified person, adding that late Sijuwade while occupying the stool has taken the seat of Ooni beyond Africa. Responding on behalf of Ife chiefs, the Obalufe of Iremo quarters, Oba Solomon Omisakin appreciated Obasanjo for the visit and promised to ensure that the laid down procedures are followed in the selection of the new Ooni.

Oba Omisakin also promised that the kingmakers would not engage in any negative activity that could tarnish their image during and after the selection process.

Four ruling houses of Oshinkola, Ogboru, Giesi and Lafogido are jostling to present candidates that would fill the vacant Ooni seat. The ex-president, accompanied by Chief Ebenezer Babatope, and other political bigwigs entered the premises of the late Ooni amid tight security.
