Obafemi Awolowo University Shut Indefinitely

Yetunde Oladejo, Osogbo

The authorities of ‎Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife have shut down the institution indefinitely.

The closure came barely 36 hours to the expiration of the tenure of the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the OAU, Prof. Bamitale Omole.

The Registrar of the university, Dotun Awoyemi made the announcement on a radio station in Ile-Ife.

Awoyemi explained that the closure was to ensure the safety of students and staff of the institution.

According to him, “We have shut down the university indefinitely pending the time we will resolve issues with our workers – Non-academic Staff of University (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (SSANU).

“We have asked our newly admitted students to go home and also postponed the resumption of old students indefinitely.”

Our correspondent learnt that the old students of the institution were expected to resume next week after a two-month break.

It would be recalled that ‎workers of the OAU under the aegis of NASU and SSANU have embarked on protests against non-payment of allowances and alleged imposition of a Vice-Chancellor despite the ‘no work’, ‘no pay’ threat by the university’s authorities.
