Non-teaching staff of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife including the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), Wednesday, embarked on a peaceful protest against the appointment of Prof. Ayobami Salami as the new Vice Chancellor of the institution.
The protesters alleged, that Salami was sponsored to replace Prof. Bamitale Omole to cover his deeds while in office.
They barricaded roads leading to the Senate Building of the university.
It was gathered that the workers had alleged that the out-going Vice Chancellor, Bamitale Omole, mismanage university funds.
It would be recalled that there had been legal tussle on the appointment on the new Vice Chancellor for the institution.
The workers accused the governing council of flouting a court order that restrained it from appointing a new Vice Chancellor.
Speaking with journalists during the protest, NASU chairman OAU chapter, Mr Ademola Oketunde, faulted the governing council led by Prof. Rowland Ndoma-Egba, over the appointment, saying its action was a case of clear disregard for court order.
In his reaction, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju insisted that the appointment of Prof Ayobami Salami followed due process.
