As the appointment of Director General of the Department of State Security Service continues to generate heated controversies, the Northern Alternative Forum, NAF, yesterday rose strongly to defend Daura’s appointment, saying he is eminently qualified.
The body in a statement made available to The Union in Abuja, said it disagreed with the People’s Democratic Party’s controversial position on the appointment of Mr. Daura as the Acting Director General of the Department of State Security by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The statement which was signed by the NAF Chairman, Alhaji Gidado Ibrahim, Sarkin Yamman Portiskum, declared that the People’s Democratic Party, PDP spokesman, Olisa Metuh, failed to convince Nigerians beyond any reasonable doubt that Daura is a card-carrying member of the APC.
The Forum noted that Metuh’s reliance on a picture of Buhari in a shake with Daura during the electioneering as basis for such conclusions cannot hold waters or serve as a veritable proof that Daura is indeed a card carrying member of the APC. “For the incoherent and voluble Metuh to be taken seriously by Nigerians, the onus lies on his party to publish the APC card of Mr. Daura. Anything short of that could be interpreted as a tendentious assertion by the PDP grab the headlines and mislead Nigerians”, he said.
Alhaji Ibrahim declared that since the PDP spokesman also failed to show that Daura was incompetent to hold the office, the acting DSS DG should be allowed to concentrate on his job. “While I do not hold brief for Mr. Daura, many Nigerians believe that his track record of performance and competence while in the service of DSS earned him the well-deserved appointment.
“At any rate, his appointment followed the usual pattern of appointments made by the President where the appointees were chosen on merit. “A case in point was the humble submission of Mr. President while unveiling the newly appointed Service Chiefs to the effect that save for the Chief of Army Staff Gen. T. Buratai whom he briefly met during the tour of his duty post as the Commander of the Multi-National Joint Task Force, he never knew any of the Service Chiefs before appointing them”, the NAF leader stated.
He also argued that although “Daura hails from the same Katsina State with President Buhari, his appointment as DG DSS followed the same pattern of Mr. President where competence is elevated beyond mediocrity in taking such a very crucial decision particularly now that the nation is embroiled in the war against terrorism and insurgency.”
He cited the example of the appointment of some government officials who were also made to play some political roles during the electioneering campaigns during the tenure of the last administration. “Despite playing the role of Chief Security Adviser to the PDP, former IGP Mike Okiro was appointed Chairman of the Police Service Commission, which is apolitical Organisation saddled with the welfare, discipline and promotion of police officers.
“A former Director General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Yusuf Nuhu was brought in by President Yar’Adua after he retired as an Executive Director to head the FRCN. Metuh should go to equity with a clean hands or he risk the danger of being rubbished by Nigerians who were dehumanized and impoverished under the 16-year rule of his PDP.”
He urged “Nigerians and Mr. Daura to ignore Metuh’s ignorance on the workings of the Buhari administration and advise him to concentrate on learning how to become a responsible opposition spokesman instead of being a rabble-rouser.”
“Metuh should stop dissipating his energy on chasing shadows but pay more attention to the recent allegation of embezzlement of billions of naira leveled against members of the National Working Committee of the PDP by establishment staff of the party”, he added.
