NLC, TUC Suspend Three Affiliate Unions

The three affiliate Unions of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Cross River State, the State Chapters of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) have been suspended by the State Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress for engaging in acts inimical to the progress of the Labour movement.

The suspension was announced by the State Chairman of NLC, Comrade John Ushie at a Press Conference in Calabar. Comrade Ushie said “we are constraint to address you at this auspicious moment to draw your attention to certain happenings in the State as it concerns the organized Labour”

He recalled that on the 2nd of October, 2015, the two Labour Centres in the State, NLC and TUC called out Public Sector Workers in the State employ on strike to press home the demands for better welfare of workers in the State.

“After four days of total shutdown of the state, the state government and the leadership of NLC TUC and JNC reached a compromise on the issues in contention” he said.

“The SEC of NLC (which the three Unions are affiliated to) met in an emergency meeting on the 6th October, 2015 and reviewed the actions of the three Unions and resolved to slam a temporary suspension on the three Unions: NUT, JUSUN and NULGE while setting up a Committee to investigate the Unions with a view to determining the reason for their action”.

Disappointingly, the Committee duly sat and invited the concerned Unions but they failed to turn-up to defend themselves.

Consequently, upon submission of the report by the Committee which noted the recalcitrance of the three Unions, the SEC of NLC met again on the 8th December, 2015 and ratified the suspension earlier slammed on the three Unions as well as making the suspension indefinite.

As far as the State Council of NLC is concerned, the three Unions: NUT, JUSUN and NULGE, according to him have been suspended indefinitely.
