The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology said it is putting in place effective strategies and steps that will fast track the establishment of the Science and Technology Park.
The project, according to the Permanent Secretary Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, will promote the development of home grown technology with local content, coordinate all research and development outputs in the country, attract and regulate the flow of foreign technologies, harness all the pool of techno- logical potentials and create jobs for the unemployed.
She stated this in her office in Abuja when she received a 100 page report of the Committee on Operationalization of Shestco Silicon Valley (SSV) which was constituted on November 28, 2014 by the former Minister.
Mrs. Oyo – Ita stressed that the process of financing the project which will enable Nigeria realize its dream of being at par with developed tech- nologies of the world would be public private partnership driven. She further stated that the project is expected to be supported by UNESCO through its ‘Seed Fund’.
For the purpose of creating awareness and sensitization, the Permanent Secretary said the ministry would carry out an in house sensitisation, in- terministerial interaction, hold international conferences and engage the Organized Private sector.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the 16 manCom- mittee which was set up to work out modalities for the operationalization of the project, Engr. Umar Bindir presented a report with far reaching recom- mendations to the Permanent Secretary. The recommenda- tions among others are: that the Ministry should change the name Shestco Silicon Valley as trademark to Science and Technology Park, develop the master plan for investors to key nto, develop a frame work and strategy for funding that will attract international and local donors, take the lead and coordinate all research and development outputs.
It would also constitute an adhoc governing board, to bring on board past presidents and other competent people to start the operationalisation, set up a high power evaluation and monitoring team and have a strong advocacy through sus- tainable publicity to sensitize Nigerians.
