Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State has admonished members of the 8th State House of Assembly to resist and expose any act of corruption in the state so as to fast track the mission and vision of his administration.
Bello made the appeal in a speech at the inauguration of the state assembly in Minna saying it was the responsibility of the legislators to appropriate funds and carry out effective oversight functions. He said “it is pertinent to point out that the legislature needs to concentrate on its constitutional duties of law making, appropriation, exposing corruption and inefficiency in the management of public funds and oversight functions.
The governor noted that “the challenge before us is enormous and herculean but definitely surmountable. You must make effective laws, review them, repel where necessary and enact new ones, appropriate funds and carry out effective oversight functions so that good governance ethics can be enthroned to deliver campaign promises to the people.”
Bello who was represented by his deputy, Mr. Ahmed Ketso, also called on the legislators to donate projects to their constituencies as personal contribution Meanwhile, the member representing Chanchaga Constituency, Hon Marafa Ahmed Guni, was elected Speaker of the State House of Assembly.
Hon. Mohammed Bashir Lokogoma from Wushishi constituency moved the motion for his nomination and seconded by Hon. Bako Kasim Alfa representing Bida I constituency. In his acceptance speech, the new Speaker , Marafa said “I promise to serve the House and people of Niger State diligently”.
He said “I am your servant and I will continue to be at your service because that is what you elected me to be. To do this, we must correct the past and make history. We must device every strategy to make judicious use of the mandate given to us by our people.” Also, Hon. Binta Mamman from Gurara constituency nominated Hon. Hussaini Ibrahim representing Agaie constituency as Deputy Speaker of the House. The motion was seconded by Nura Garba representing Kotangora II constituency.
