INEC Parley On Way Forward For Elections

Patrick Osadebamwen, Abuja

Staffers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were yesterday charged to be frank in discussing the way forward for the commission on electoral systems.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, who handed down this charge yesterday, also enjoined the staffers not to be over- whelmed by the commenda- tions from the general public on the successful performance of commission on the conduct of the 2015 general elections.

He said the commission was determined to make the future elections better than the past elections through drawing experience from past elections.

Jega gave this charge to INEC electoral officers at a retreat or- ganized by the commission in collaboration with the Interna- tional Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and noted that in spite of the constraints, the commission was able to deliver credible elections to the country in 2015.

He also pointed out that there

was no other option than for the commission to better the electoral process which is the most reliable vehicle to deliver on credible elections and ulti- mately good governance for the country men.

According to Jega “We will try and do what we did in 2011. Basically everybody is free to speak openly and frankly and sincerely.

“Let us not waste time dis- cussing what we did right, what we did right was good and it has helped us to have a good elec- tion in 2011 and 2015 but let us focus on what we did wrong.
