Implement Jonathan’s NIRP To Achieve Diversification -Minister

Dyepkazah Shibayan, Abuja

Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Okechukwu Enelemah on Thursday stated that country needs to implement the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP), which was initiated by the Goodluck Jonathan administration, if diversification of the economy was to be achieved.

The Minister said this when he appeared before the House of Representatives at the ongoing sectoral debate.

He stressed that due to current economic challenges, it is high time the country made a transition from being an exporter of raw commodities to being an industrial economy.

“Our industrialization ambition is hinged in the Nigerian Industrial revolution plan launched by the previous government in 2014.

“It is now time to move from plan to action. It is now our duty to implement that plan in light of current realities, taking into consideration the lessons learnt in the two years since it was unveiled, “he explained.

He said though successes have been recorded in the cement and sugar industries, more players and stakeholders are being engaged by the Federal Government in the automotive and cotton, textile and garment industries.

The Minister further appealed to the lawmakers to amend the Company and Allied Matter Act which would ease doing business in the country.

Enelemah said the SME’s ‎would be a means of creating jobs and achieving inclusive growth.

“When passed, these pieces of legislation will significantly improve access to Finance for small businesses, “he said.

On his part, the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, said he would want to see the Federal Government draw up “bankable policies” on the SME’s.
